9 TIPS TO LIVING A HEALTHIER LIFE

How healthy are you?  What does being healthy mean to you?  Well, most people will tell you that being healthy is lack of disease and that it involves exercising and eating a healthy meal regularly.  However, good health is a lot more than that.

Creating a holistic healthy lifestyle includes being physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.  Exercising and eating a healthy meal only covers the physical part of your well being.

Mental and emotional health involves your overall psychological well being.  This includes the way you feel about yourself, the quality of your relationships and your ability to manage your feelings and how you deal with difficulties.  It also involves being happy, self confident, self aware and resilient.  People who are mentally and emotionally healthy are able to handle life's inevitable challenges, bounce back when bad things happen and do not let stress get in their way.

Healthy living thus encompasses balance in your physical, mental and emotional well being.  Here are 9 tips to living a more healthier life.
  1. Think positive - Research shows that a healthy positive attitude helps to build a healthy immune system and boosts overall health.  Your body believes what you think, hence the need to focus on the positive.  Furthermore, it helps control emotional eating which is eating when you feeling low or are unhappy as opposed to eating when you are hungry.
  2. Drink water regularly - Water is life! It is all around us and even in us.  Did you know that water makes up 2/3rd of who we are and influences 100% of the processes in our bodies?

  3. Get enough sleep - Getting enough quality sleep at the right time can help protect your mental and physical health and quality of life.  While sleeping, your body is usually at work to support a healthy brain function and to maintain your physical health.  Therefore, lack of enough sleep can affect how well you think, function, learn, react, work and even how you get along with others.
  4. Eat more fruits and vegetables - They are highly recommended for their high energy and nutritional value.
Experts suggest that we should have 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables, which means you should make one half of your plate to be of fruits/vegetables.

BECOME THE CEO OF YOUR LIFE

I was totally struck by this statement the first time I saw it.   It  completely changed my view and perception of life.  I had never thought of viewing life in such a perspective.

Think about it 'You are the Chief Executive Officer of your life'.   Most of us work in a company or probably manage their own business whatever it may be.  Every company has a structure where the  CEO is usually the head.

A CEO of a company is generally the person who takes charge of all  the decision regarding the growth and development of a company which include all sectors and fields of the company.  He/She is responsible for the success/failure of a company and works towards improving it in every aspect to achieve its vision/goals.

Every company/organization is established as a means for achieving defined objectives.  It's got different divisions/department depending on the size of the company each having its own end objectives/goals for each department.

Think about it this way, your life as your company.  Start viewing your life as the  company you work for and you as the CEO.

Real Life Application:

As the CEO of your life you are in charge of all the decision required to the overall improvement of all aspects of your life.  You are the end determinant of how you chose to live your life.  That means you are responsible for any success or failure in your life.  As the CEO of your life, you realize that if you neglect any area of your life then the overall life performance will be affected.  So how do you do this?

Ask yourself the following:

What kind of CEO are you?  Are you a competitive CEO? Are you working hard towards the highest achievement of your company/life?

How about your company? What is its overall performance? - This applies to where you are in life.  What's the growth of your company? Are you working towards growing your company everyday or is your company stagnate?  Is it about to crash down or is it thriving?

How are the different departments in your company performing?  In companies they've got different departments such as human resource department, sales & marketing, finance e.t.c depending on the  size of the company.  In your life, how are the different departments faring? These include; career, wealth, health(nutrition and fitness), Relationships(family, friends, love) and spirituality.

Are you making sure you are not neglecting any of them?  A company's overall performance is dragged down if one of the department is neglected.
Are you neglecting any of your department?  It's sad that most people concentrate more on career and wealth neglecting all the other aspects of their life which are equally important and hence find that most people are never happy with their life even with the acquired wealth.  Some people work all their life for wealth, neglecting their health and end up using all the acquired wealth to sustain their health.  How about your friends, family, love life, spirituality how are those departments of your life faring?

What are the short term and long term goals for your company?  Just like all companies have goals, what are your life goals? what are you goals 1,2,5 -10years from now.   Do you write them down? Where do you want to see yourself in 1,2,3 or 10 years from now and as the CEO of your life what decisions are you making to ensure you achieve them?

As the CEO of your life how often are you reviewing your company?  Most companies do quarterly or half year reviews on their performances and identify the improvements they've made and what needs to be improved. What's your review on your life thus far, what improvements have you made and what need to be improved?

What is the strategy and vision of your company?  It is the ultimate duty of every CEO to set direction for their company, its mission statement.  As the CEO of your life what have you set as the direction of your life? What's your mission in life? Your life's purpose?  Your life's goals? Have you identified them and are you working towards them? Without a clear direction in life, life can be hollow.

What are your company's core values?  Every company is defined by their values.  Vision is where the company is going whereas values is how the company gets there. .  I remember in my previous company we had to remember the core values of the company and were always reminded to live in line with them to achieve the company's vision.  For example one of the core value was professionalism and you had to ensure that you were professional in everything you did at work.  As the CEO of your life, what are the principles that define you? What are your core values in life?  What are your beliefs?  Are you living in alignment with them to achieve your life's goal

What's your team comprised of?  Every CEO hires and fires his senior management team and the management team does the same for the rest of the staff in the organization.  This is to remove the non performers in the company dragging the company down and replacing them with the performers a dedicated team for the betterment of the company.  They also get good advisers.

In real life you need people who elevate and help you become a better person. So as the CEO of your life are you ensuring you have the best team around you?  Are your friends helping you grow or dragging  you down.  Are they helping you towards the attainment of  your life's goals?  Do you have any advisers? in this case a mentor?  Someone you look up to?

As a CEO, are you sharpening your skills to stay sane and skillful, to stay top of the heap? - For better performance, most CEO's will provide additional training and education to their employees in the various departments and themselves too for better performance of the company.

As the CEO of your life are you making sure your learning and growing?  Studying books and materials to make you better and that help you learn and grow overall, and by overall I mean all aspects of your life.  All the departments of your life{health(nutrition & fitness), career, wealth, spirituality, relationship(family, friends and love)}.  You could  be knowledgeable on how to build a successful career but do you know what it takes to build a loving relationship? To build a strong family bond?  What keeping your health in check and healthy living involves?

The key note here is that, for every company to be successful, every CEO will work on ensuring that non of the departments of the company are neglected.  They are well aware that neglecting any part of their department will affect the overall performance of the company on the downside.  In real life being the CEO of your life means you are responsible for the success or failure in your life.  And just like in every company you need to realize that neglecting a certain department in your life will affect your larger life and thus won't lead you to living your best life.  Living your best life and a life of excellence means living a balanced life.  Ensuring that all areas of your life are at peak performance.  Being the CEO of your life means that you hold the key to your destiny. Be the conscious creator of the life you wish to live.

Below is  a note that was said to be a 'death-bed essay' by Apple co- founder, Steve Jobs which was being spread on social media between the month of November and December last year.  I personally came across it first on Instagram.  However it was found out that, the words were actually NOT by Steve Jobs as they weren't confirmed to be true by anyone close to him.  However, the words are really powerful and true and I believe that no matter who said or wrote the words they can be quite helpful in our daily lives.  They personally got me thinking about my life.  They are very deep and introspective.

                   ・・・
  • Steve jobs’ Last Words  -
    -
I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world.
    -
In others’ eyes, my life is an epitome of success.
    -
However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.
    -
At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death.
    -
In the darkness, I look at the green lights from the life supporting machines and hear the humming mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of god of death drawing closer…
    -
Now I know, when we have accumulated sufficient wealth to last our lifetime, we should pursue other matters that are unrelated to wealth…
    -
Should be something that is more important:
    -
Perhaps relationships, perhaps art, perhaps a dream from younger days ... Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person into a twisted being, just like me.
    -
God gave us the senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions brought about by wealth.
    -
The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me.
    -
What I can bring is only the memories precipitated by love.
    -
That’s the true riches which will follow you, accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on.
    -
Love can travel a thousand miles. Life has no limit. Go where you want to go. Reach the height you want to reach. It is all in your heart and in your hands.
    -
What is the most expensive bed in the world? - "Sick bed" …
    -
You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you.
    -
Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost – "Life". When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading – "Book of Healthy Life". Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with time, we will face the day when the curtain comes down.
    -
Treasure love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends... Treat yourself well. Cherish others.

YOU ARE THE AVERAGE OF THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU SPEND THE MOST TIME WITH

"You are the average of the five people you spend the most  time with" ~ Jim Rohn

Well, I wouldn't take this quote by motivational speaker Jim Rohn literally to mean that you really are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.  I believe your level of consciousness can determine how much you get influenced by people around you.  I believe however, that what he meant was, the kind of friends you surround yourself with will somehow have an influence in your life and impact who you eventually become.  Could be positively or negatively.

How the people you spend most time with will affect your life

First of, I believe your level of consciousness will determine how much you get influenced by people around you.  Knowing yourself well enough will help you become cognizant of the kind of friends you are keeping and thus the kind of influence they bring to your life, depending on how you frequently chose to spend time with them.

However, energy is really  contagious.  The ones you spend most time with influence your thoughts, beliefs, attitude and your level of success more than you think.  You may be truly conscious but if you tend to constantly surround yourself with negative people, people vibrating at low energy levels, it will definitely have a downside effect in your life as opposed to surrounding yourself with people of a higher vibration, positive minded people who will elevate you higher and push you to become  better.

For example, if you are always around people who are always complaining, shifting blame on everyone, people who always tend to see life at a negative perspective, they will somehow want to make you see life 'in their perspective'.   Slowly by slowly you'll start shifting into their level of low vibration even if you were initially a positive minded person.

On the other hand surrounding yourself with optimistic people, people who are always followed by success because they understand that life is what you make it out to be, will inspire you and will actually give you an insight in life that you probably never knew existed.  They will push you to strive higher and become like them.

This however does not mean that you have to lose all your friends if they do not elevate you.   I believe there are different kind of friendship levels and knowing the level of friendship you are in with someone is the key.  You could have friends who are colleagues, friends who are your family, friends who inspire you, friends who don't necessary have highs aspirations but are fun to be with.

All these friends are great for different things.  The key here is the time you spend with each of these friends.  Spend less time with people who don't add value to your life and more with those who enable you become a better person.  However if they are the kind of friends who always want to bring you down and do this intentionally, then I believe that you should completely cut them from your life completely.

Identify Your Circle

Identify the kind of person you want to become: The first step to knowing if the kind of friends you hang out with are helping you grow or not is to identify the person you want to become.  Your ideal self.  Do these friends  match the qualities you want to possess?  Do they elevate you and push you closer to your vision or do they bring you down?

Identify the people who you admire and inspire you to become better

This could be anyone.  It could be people in your social circle or outside your social circle.  It could be people who are locally or international known and you  have no contact with.
After identifying them, think of how you could increase contact with them.  You could do this by either direct contact or through their works.

If it someone you know you could start spending more time with them, getting to know them better..  If it's someone you do not know, you could follow their works if they have any.  These include books they've written, their shows, their social media pages.  For example I personally draw inspiration from plenty of people I have no direct contact with both locally and internationally e.g Dr. Chris Kirubi, locally and Oprah Winfrey internationally.  However, this doesn't stop me from learning from them.  A simple thing as following the right people on social media would surprise you, as there's  just so much you could learn and grow from them.

Get Busy Becoming The Best Version of Yourself

The moment you begin your personal growth journey, that moment when you realize that it is you to create the life you want and no one else, you will automatically see yourself attracting the kind of friends vibrating at the same conscious level as you and slowly you start detaching yourself from those friends who don't help you grow.  Moreover, the energy level you start vibrating at will become contagious to the people around you and you will automatically start inspiring the people around you with your positivity and be the one elevating your friends.
Focus on becoming your best self and being the best you can be to your friends through your actions.

MY YOGA JOURNEY

I have always loved yoga but I had never thought of considering it as part of my lifestyle until late last year.  Yes! I am a newbie yogi! I am however, so glad I got to start my yoga classes last year, it had been such a long time coming!

The purpose of yoga is to create strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body. I also love the fact that it can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their age, and it's got so many health benefits.

There are so many forms of yoga. Some are are fast-paced and intense while others are gentle and relaxing.  I however, choose to focus on the basic one for now; 'Hatha Yoga'  which combines a series of basic movements and breathing exercises.

Here is more to what I love about yoga....

Physical Benefits

  • Lessens chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis and headaches, lowers blood pressure and reduce insomnia.
  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved respiration and energy vitality
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Weight reduction
  • Maintaining a balanced metabolism

Mental Benefits

Besides the physical benefits, yoga's incorporation of meditation and breathing exercises can help improve a person's  mental well being.  It creates mental clarity and calmness, thus increasing body awareness, relaxes the mind, centers attention and sharpens concentration.

Welcome to my yoga journey for more........

40 MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF REGULARLY

How much do you know about yourself reallyHave you ever been asked a question about yourself and you get baffled by it?  You think about the question and it gets you to the 'aha' moment where you go like.."Hmm, I have never thought about that....." and then it certainly hits you how much of an important question that is and immediately you start reflecting on it?

Claude Levi-Strauss, who was a famous French anthropologist said, "The wise man doesn't give the right answers, he poses the right questions."  There's just so much you can learn about someone by simply asking them the right questions. In the same way, there's just so much you can learn about yourself by asking yourself all the right questions.

Here is a conversation between a friend of mine and myself on watsup, some time back, about a question he asked me about myself.

I must say I was quite impressed by how fast I got to answer the question.  To be truly honest however, it is because I had already started doing so much self reflection which is key to personal growth and self awareness.  If you'd have asked me the same questions a while back I'd honestly get stamped.  I still get baffled by some questions but the good thing is that self discovery is a long life process.

Questions are good.  When a question is asked it triggers your mind to deep thinking. The right questions drive our thought underneath the surface of things.

For example, questions of information force us to look at our source and quality of information, questions of purpose, force us to define our task, questions of assumptions force us to look at what we are taking for granted.
Hence, knowing the right questions to ask yourself every now and then will determine the kind of person you become.  It raises your self awareness levels e.g of where you are in life and where you wish to be and this in turn helps you to consciously chose the life you want to lead,a life dictated by your heart desires and not by others.
